AUSTRALIAN
ALMOND INDUSTRY |
|
Australia
is the major commercial producer of almonds in the southern
hemisphere. With its very hot and dry summers and all
Californian imported machinery, the Australian industry
is a copy of the Californian model.
Australia
is fortunate as it has a longer flowering period each
August and the pollination from year to year produces
very consistent yields. Australia is also lucky in that
it does not have navel orange worm. Over fifty per cent
of Australia’s almonds are Nonpareil, with Carmel
being the next most popular along with other pollinating
varieties such as Peerless, Neplus and Fritz. |
